On Friday, Dec 4th we will visit siliciclastic outcrops of the Wilcox Group (Sabinetown Fm) and Carrizo Sandstone. Outcrops contain excellent examples of coarsening-upward progradational tidal deltaic successions and tidal flats that also include tidal channels and tidal bars. We will discuss significant facies changes and key surfaces as well as biostratigraphy that allows us to correlate the outcrops with deeper-water Wilcox deposits including the Middle Wilcox and Yoakum shale.
We will spend Friday night in San Marcos. On Saturday we will head up into the Hill Country near Canyon Dam to examine Cretaceous carbonates of the Glen Rose Formation and will discuss the evolution of carbonate systems. This stratigraphy includes the Corbula Texana bed that divides the Glen Rose into a lower and upper member. We will also examine the Hidden Valley Fault Zone.
